Cloud nine

Bonjorno!

Now that we have a clear vision of what places we’ll be visiting in Florida, it’s time to move on to the next important issue: accommodation. A good night’s sleep is vital to survive everyday life but on holiday it’s extra important. Looking like a (sleep)drunk badger might not be that much of a waste at work/school but when you’re on holiday you want to make the most out of every minute.

The one place where we’re sure to stay at a hotel, is in Orlando. More specifically, we’ll be staying at one of the Universal Orlando Resorts. Now, this is way more fancy than what we usually go for but we figured it was the most logical choice to make when weighing out the pro’s and cons.

PRO:
- Luxurious: certainly not for every night of our vacation but it is something that we wanted to experience at least once in our lifetime.
- Universal Express: you’ll automatically get access to the Express Plus lines at the theme parks so you can spend more time on a ride than waiting in line for it. This is something that we wanted to get regardless if we would stay at a resort or not.
- Easy access to the parks: Universal offers boat rides from the resorts to the theme parks and back.
- Extra time: when staying at one of the resorts, you get to spend some extra time in the two parks. The park opens earlier and closes later. This can really come in handy for the popular attractions in both parks (think: Wizarding World of Harry Potter).

CON:
- Expensive: With room rates at the cheapest resort starting from $269 a night this is a rather big con)
- ‘Mainstream’: you’re going to get less of a personal touch when you stay at a hotel, especially when compared to a B&B for example.

If hotel accommodation is right up your alley there are many option out there for you and not all of them have to be at the top of the price range. There are several hotel franchises that are widespread across America. Some examples are Best Western, Holiday Inn and Radisson. These last two hotel chains can also be found in Europe. They offer basic, clean rooms with just enough comfort to give you a decent night’s sleep. And since we’re in a (sub)tropical climate, you can be sure that they offer AC as well. Another basic necessity for survival, besides shelter and sleep, is food. In Europe it’s very common to get an extensive breakfast when you stay at a hotel. In America, however, this is not the case. Americans like to eat out and breakfast is no exception. Of course some hotels will offer a breakfast but it probably won’t be to the standards of the buffet you’ll get in Europe so be prepared. It’s best to always check in advance whether or not your hotel offers a breakfast buffet. If not, make sure there’s an establishment nearby where you can score some food. There’s no need to deny yourself delicious food in the morning, they are hard enough as it is.
