Florida route: part 2

Bonjorno!

As promised, today we bring you the second part of our route in detail. Eventhough the second part consists of only two places, these places couldn’t be more opposites of each other. On one side you have the beautiful pristine beaches of Sanibel Island and on the other side there’s the slightly daunting mangroves of the Everglades. Two very different sides of nature!
(Everglades city tours)

Our first stop is Sanibel Island, known to most as the ideal place for shelling and is also a perfect getaway spot. For some, it can truly be a slice of heaven on earth since you can leave the hustle and bustle of the energy-draining cities far behind you on this island. There isn’t really a town center is the exact definition of the word, there are no traffic lights and you’ll have to look very hard to find vendors and bars along the beaches. Now obviously, since the sandy beaches are full of shells, the sand ‘quality’ isn’t as paradise-like as other beaches but that’s just a small price to pay for a wonderful activity at the beach. Grab you nets and let’s get our shell on!

Next on our list: the Everglades. Honestly I’m a bit creeped out by the thought of venturing into a huge grassy swamp-like area whose could-blooded inhabitants resemble something out of prehistoric ages and could easily swallow me whole but you know what they say: face your fears, right? Try something new every day? Yeah, hopefully one of those mantras will get me into – and out of, preferably alive - the Everglades. The wetlands of the Everglades National Park stretch out over 1,509,000 acres (6,110 km²) and is amongst the three largest national parks in the continental USA.

(Audubon Florida)

It is home to a whole lot of tropical wading birds, Florida panthers and of course American crocodiles. You can reach the Everglades National Park by car but if you want to explore the park, it won’t do you any further good. Get on a bike, hike if you will or –if you’re feeling especially adventurous- step into a kayak or canoe to drift amongst the alligators. There is a whole lot to see and do here but that’s something we’ll go into in this week’s Thursday Tickle!
(Appleseedexpeditions)
Come check it out in two days!
